Hello, my walking friend! Did you start walking during the introduction? I hope so! If you are like me, you might need to take a few deep breaths to let go of some burdens from every day life. If so, take a few seconds and breathe deeply and set your thoughts on Jesus. This is going to be a blessed 10 minutes! So, let’s get started!
Today is the 14th episode in the names of Jesus series. Today we are reflecting on Jesus, the Way.
Our verse to meditate on today is: John 14:6 NIV:
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
When we have trouble making sense of this world, Jesus is the way.
When we are looking for peace, Jesus is the way.
When we need to forgive ourselves and others, Jesus is the way.
When we want to live sacrificial lives, Jesus is the way.
When we desire Godly character, Jesus is the way.
When we need healing, Jesus is the way.
When we seek light for the darkness, Jesus is the way.
When our soul longs to be reunited with its loving creator, Jesus is the way.
O Lord of Hosts, how lovely,
Thy tabernacles are;
For them my heart is yearning
In banishment afar.
My soul is longing, fainting,
Thy sacred courts to see;
My heart and flesh are crying,
O living God, for Thee.
This is a verse from the hymn, My Soul is Longing. Is your soul longing for the living God? Oh, friend, mine does! And Jesus is the way.
Take a little time now to meditate on John 14:6:
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
Did Jesus reveal anything special to you as you meditated on the verse?
Here’s what Jesus revealed to me as I studied and meditated on this verse:
When you go for a walk, do you know where you are going? Or do you simply wander and go wherever your legs take you? Even if you wander, with no specific plan, you always want to find your way home, don’t you? Yes, we do. And that’s true on a spiritual level, too, because Jesus has placed a longing in the soul of every one of his image bearers (that means everyone) to find its home. And the soul’s home is to be with God, the Father. And the way to God is Jesus.
Whether we like to hear this or not, Jesus is the only way for our souls to find peace in their eternal home. He is the only way for us to have life everlasting in heaven. And he doesn’t want any to wander and be lost, never to find their home. His extravagant love and mercy will go to great lengths to persuade people that he is the way. But he won’t force his love on anyone. It is a free choice to declare that Jesus is the way, the only way, to a relationship with God. Jesus desires to be the way for us to live an abundant, purposeful life here, and to be the way to spend eternity with him ever after.
Let’s take some time to meditate again on Jesus, the Way, and what that means to us.
You are now at the halfway point of your walk. If you need to be back in 10 minutes, this would be the time to turn around and head back.
Now I am going to pray for us:
Dear Jesus,
I believe you are the way, the truth, and the life. Even though I may not fully understand your triune nature, I believe your words are the truth and I accept them by faith. Jesus, lots of people say there are many paths to God, that there is not one right way. But I know, based on your word, that they are deceived. Otherwise, you would have told us differently. My heart overflows with gratitude when I think about all you have done to make a way for me, a sinful person, to be with you, a holy God. You are my savior, my only path to peace. You are the way to life everlasting. Please forgive me, Jesus, for those times when I have doubted this truth. Help me stand strong against the lies of the enemy. Thank you, Jesus, for walking with me, always, and for showing me the way. Amen.
Here are some questions for you to consider:
Have you ever gotten lost on a walk or hike? How did that make you feel? Think about your answer now.
Do you like to know where you are going or do you like the adventure of traveling without a map or plan? Consider your response.
Do you have assurance about where your soul will go when you die? How does the answer to that question make you feel? Take some time to consider your answer.
Before we wrap up, listen to today’s verse one last time: John 14:6:
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
Is there anything else you would like to talk to Jesus about? Remember, he is right there with you, walking with you, and he is eager for you to share all that is on your heart and mind with him. Take some time to talk to Jesus now.
Well, did you find your way back to where you started? More importantly, has your soul found its way back home? I hope so.
