Hello, my walking friend! This is the day the Lord has made – glad you laced up to walk with him! Are you ready to do some good for your body and soul? Come one, let’s do this!
Today is the 12th episode in the names of Jesus series. What a wonderful blessing that Jesus shared all of them with us in his word! Today we are reflecting on Jesus, the Creator.
Our verse to meditate on today is: Colossians 1:16 NIV
For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.
Today’s verse is only one of many that reminds us that Jesus is the Creator.
John 1:3 NIV
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
1 Corinthians 8:6 NIV
…yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.
Before we head into a time of meditation on today’s verse, here is a prayer from The Book of Common Prayer for finding Joy in God’s Creation:
O heavenly Father, who hast filled the world with beauty: Open our eyes to behold thy gracious hand in all thy works; that, rejoicing in thy whole creation, we may learn to serve thee with gladness; for the sake of him through whom all things were made, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Now let’s take a little time to meditate on Colossians 1:16:
For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.
Did Jesus reveal anything special to you as you meditated on the verse?
Here’s what Jesus revealed to me as I studied and meditated on this verse:
Jesus was before all things and it is by his power that all things are held together. He created everything in heaven and earth. If you are walking today in the daytime, consider the sky, the sun, and the clouds. Look at the variety of living things you see – plant life, animal life, insects, birds. All of it was created by Jesus.
If you are walking at night, look up at the night sky and try to count the stars. Impossible, right? And yet Jesus knows each one. Look at the moon that maintains a consistent distance from the earth. Close your eyes for a moment and consider all that he has created. Isn’t it magnificent? But as wonderful as all of these things are, his most precious creation are his image bearers – that would be you! As you walk and breathe in air and feel your heart beat, consider your cardiopulmonary system. As your legs and arms move in a natural rhythm, consider your musculoskeletal system. Consider how wonderfully and fearfully you are made and how much Jesus loves you.
Let’s take some time to meditate again on Jesus, the Creator and what that means to us.
You are now at the halfway point of your walk. If you need to be back in 10 minutes, this would be the time to turn around and head back.
Now I am going to pray for us:
Dear Jesus,
Forgive me for the many times I take your creation for granted. Help me pause and simply worship you for being the creator of the universe and for being my creator. Fill me with a holy awe over all you have created. You are incomprehensible. How can I understand your mind, a mind that brought into being the ocean and all the life within it? The galaxies and all the stars and planets within it. Heaven and earth and everything within them. My human mind can’t fathom the mind that could create all of this and more. But you, my incomprehensible creator, come to my level to make yourself known to me. You truly are love, Jesus, and in awe I thank you for walking with me always. Amen.
Here are some questions for you to consider:
Has the glory of Jesus’ creation ever overwhelmed you while out on a walk or hike? In what way did his creation speak to your soul? Take some time to consider your answer.
How does it make you feel that the creator of everything wants to walk with you? Think of what that means to you.
Jesus is still creating today – he can create in us a clean heart and right spirit. When is the last time you asked Jesus to create a clean heart in you? Take some time now to ask him.
Before we wrap up, listen to today’s verse one last time:
Colossians 1:16
For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.
Is there anything else you would like to talk to Jesus about? Remember, he is right there with you, walking with you, and he is eager for you to share all that is on your heart and mind with him. Take some time to talk to Jesus now.
Well, you did it! 10 minutes of walking! Ten minutes of walking with the Creator in his creation! Give yourself a pat on the back! Thank you for taking the time to walk with me, my friend. But more importantly, you walked with Jesus! Can you feel yourself drawing closer to him as you meditate on his precious names? I hope so!
