Hello, my walking friend! By now I hope you have started on your walk, whether you are taking a quick break at work or simply taking a walk around the block, I hope your blood is pumping and your heart and mind are ready to focus on Jesus.
I’m excited about this series. It is so comforting to me to meditate on the many names of Jesus because every name for him has such deep meaning.
Today we are going to start with the beginning – with Jesus, The Alpha.
Our verse to meditate on is Revelation 21:6 (NIV):
And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.
Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and is described as something that is first. When you read the gospel of John, the first thing we read are these words:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
John is talking about Jesus, the first, the beginning.
And then, we go to the last book of the Bible, the book of Revelation, also written by the apostle John, and Jesus tells us again that he is the beginning, the Alpha.
Take 30 seconds now to meditate on Revelation 21:6:
And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.
Did Jesus reveal anything special to you?
Here’s what Jesus revealed to me as I studied and meditated on this verse:
Jesus is the Alpha, the first, the beginning. He was before all things and he holds all things together by his power and love. Everything he has done, he has done out of his love for us. But, my walking friend, our life here is so temporary. Jesus has much greater things awaiting you. In him, you will have all that he has prepared for you.
Remember the story of the Samaritan woman at the well, which is also from the gospel of John (John 4:4-26). Jesus told the woman that he is the living water. She accepted the living water that he offered her – the truth that he is the promised Messiah, and he is our promised Messiah, our savior. All that was promised to her was given to her – and he gives us all that he promises.
Are you thirsty for Jesus? Are you thirsty for all that he offers you – love, forgiveness, peace, everlasting life?
Then hear the words of Jesus, the Alpha, again: To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.
Let’s take a minute to meditate again on Jesus, the Alpha, and what that means to us.
You are now at the halfway point of your walk. If you need to be back in 10 minutes, this would be the time to turn around and head back.
Now I am going to pray for us:
Dear Jesus,
Thank you for reminding us that you hold the universe together by your power. We worship you and praise you because you are all-powerful and yet so personal. To know that you have had a plan for us since before time fills our hearts with gratitude. The love you have for the world brings tears to our eyes because we know so many will reject you and we know this breaks your heart, Jesus. Help us be a witness to the world, as you are a witness to us. Empower us to make you the Alpha of our lives, our first priority. We release to you our need to be in control, to somehow think that we can earn your love and, in some way, pay you back for our salvation. Jesus, we know this is not true. There is nothing we can do to pay you back. Thank you for your gift of living water. Help us love you as you deserve. Let our lives bring you glory. Thank you for walking with us always, Jesus, the Alpha. Amen.
Now, I have some questions for you to consider.
Psalm 139 tells us that Jesus knit us together in our mother’s womb. How does that knowledge make you feel? Take a minute to consider your response.
Do you really believe Jesus when he said, “It is finished” and “It is done” or do you think you need to add your works to his? Take a minute to consider your response.
Jesus is also called the true and faithful witness. In what ways could you follow his example and be a witness to the world of his love? Take a minute to consider your response.
Before we wrap up, listen to today’s verse one last time:
And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.
Is there anything else you would like to talk to Jesus about? Remember, he is right there with you, walking with you, and he is eager for you to share all that is on your heart and mind with him. Take a minute now to do that.
Well, you did it! 10 minutes of walking! Thank you for taking the time to walk with me, my friend. But more importantly, you walked with Jesus! And I know that he will bless you above and beyoand what you can imagine for spending this time with him.
