Hello, my walking friend! It’s another day to spend 10 minutes with Jesus and 1o minutes doing something good for your health and I bet you have already started on your walk! Awesome! Now let’s set our hearts and minds to focus on Jesus.

Today is the 2nd episode in the Invitations of Jesus series. Today we are reflecting on Jesus’ invitation to a wedding – that is, to his wedding!

Our verse to meditate on today is Matthew 25:10 NIV:

“But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.”

Have you been to a wedding recently? They’re special, aren’t they? They are so special that couples spend months and a lot of money planning for this one day celebration.

Weddings were a big deal in Jesus’ day, too, and he even chose to perform his first miracle at one. And throughout scripture, Jesus is portrayed as a bridegroom who is coming for his bride. Those who have accepted Jesus as their Savior, are his bride, the virgins who should be eagerly waiting for his return. Jesus sends out this wedding invitation to everyone – he wants all of his image bearers to accept and be present when he returns for his bride.

But it is easy to get distracted by life and seemingly more important things. Some people think, “Oh, one day I will look into this Jesus person and decide what I think about him…when I have more time.” And even those of us who know Jesus can put our to-do list ahead of him. When we should be dropping everything to go to the wedding, we tell Jesus, hang on, I’ll be right there…after I finish this one last thing. Ouch! I feel the conviction from that one. How about you?

Jesus, our precious bridegroom, has invited us to the wedding. Shouldn’t we be prepared – body, mind, and soul – to be with him when he calls?

Take a little time now to meditate on Matthew 25:10 and Jesus invitation to you:

“But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.”

Did Jesus reveal anything special to you as you meditated on the verse? Here is a poem that I was inspired to write after meditating on this verse.

You can read the poem, The Wedding, in my poetry devotional entitled, Invitations Poetry Devotional.

You are now at the halfway point of your walk. If you need to be back in 10 minutes, this would be the time to turn around and head back.

Let’s take some time to meditate again on Jesus’ invitation to dine at his table, and what that means to us.

Now I am going to pray for us:

Dear Lord,

Remind me that this life here and all that keeps me busy, though blessings they may be, are all temporary. Convict my heart so I remember that there is nothing more important than you. I long to be at your wedding, so give me the power to focus on you and what matters most. I pray this in the precious name of Jesus, the one who invites me. Amen.

Here are some questions for you to consider:

Have you ever said, “Hold on, Lord, let me finish this one thing and then I’ll listen to you.”? If so, did you ever feel conviction in your heart for putting off Jesus? Take some time to consider your answer now.

Can you think of a time when you missed an opportunity to do something God called you to do because you were too distracted by your own to-do list? How did that make you feel? Consider your answer.

We have to live with the tension of an earthly life and things to do and God’s desire for us to stay focused on heaven and Jesus’ return. Can you think of ways to unite with Jesus in your heart and mind in the midst of this earthly life? Take some time to think of ways now.

Before we wrap up, listen to today’s verse one last time Matthew 25:10:

“But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.”

Is there anything else you would like to talk to Jesus about? Remember, he is right there with you, walking with you, and he is eager for you to share all that is on your heart and mind with him. Take some time to talk to Jesus now.

Well, you did it! 10 minutes of walking! Thank you for taking the time to walk with me, my friend, but more importantly, you walked with Jesus. And I hope you will accept every invitation that Jesus offers you…without delay!

Today’s podcast was adapted from my poetry devotional called Invitations.  I hope we can walk together again tomorrow, friend. In our next episode we will consider another invitation from Jesus. Until then, God bless you as you walk with Jesus.
